Stomach Issues that can be helped through Virtual Consultations

With everything that is going on currently in our world, we as physicians want to make this transition to virtual care as seamless as possible. Although our office doors may be shut, we are still very much open and ready to assist. Some of the things that we can help you and your family with virtually are addressing any stomach issues they might be experiencing.

As parents, you want to provide the best care your children and allow their issues to be addressed and treated. When kids start to feel discomfort in their bodies, we as physicians want to find the root of the problem and put you and you child’s minds at ease. Stomach disturbances can be somewhat common for children, but when is it time to schedule a virtual meeting with Gastro Pediatrics?

If your child is experiencing persistent, continuous vomiting, it can mean a myriad of things. First of all make sure your child has no blood or bile in their vomit, or also is experiencing a fever, diarrhea, or looks rather unwell to you, in this case bring the child to the emergency room for urgent evaluation. Make sure the child is not dehydrated and can keep liquids down, otherwise visit to an emergency/urgent care facility is essential. In child under 6 years old persistent, recurrent, chronic, continuous vomiting sometime with weight loss, poor appetite, nausea could be a sign of motion sickness, overeating, food poisoning, gastroesophageal reflux, eosinophilic esophagitis, gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, fecal impaction, constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease etc. In this case give us a call at Gastro Pediatrics as soon as you can. Chronic issues like these may become more severe if left untreated and can result in a lot of pain, discomfort, and stress for your child.

With infants, it can be a little more difficult to distinguish what is actual pain and what is just discomfort, a soiled diaper, or hunger. Since they can’t directly communicate with us and tell us exactly what is wrong, there are some signs to look for to see if they may be experiencing abdominal pain. Depending on the age of your infant and the symptoms, they could be experiencing anything from intussusception, viral or bacterial infections, or Colic. For example, if your infant is between 10 days to three months old and is experiencing inconsolable crying, often gas passing, pulling up of their legs, and overall irritability, they may be experiencing Colic. No one knows exactly why it occurs, but sometimes, changing formula, giving probiotic or antacid medication infant’s pain can get relieved. Sometimes malrotation has to be ruled out with radiological and laboratory testing. With the help of virtual consulting, we at GastroPediatric will help to find the root of the issue, as well as the best course of action to assist you and your baby in finding a solution.

With teenagers, if they are experiencing stomach issues they may want to notify you or they may not. Stomach issues can be somewhat embarrassing for teenagers to talk about, but it is pretty common. Here are some symptoms to look out for that would indicate that you need to speak with us virtually. For starters, if your teen over a period of time is losing appetite, gets fatigued, stops participating in sports, experiencing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea call us, as these symptoms can worsen if left untreated. Of course, if teen looks unwell, there is blood in their vomit or diarrhea, that is usually a red flag that needs to be addressed with the emergency room. If they are chronically persistently or frequently constipated, experience blood in their stool, or have abdominal pain that is debilitating their regular life, you should reach out and schedule a least virtual consultation.

Of course, at the end of the day you know your child the best and if you feel any concerns for their health, it doesn’t hurt to give us a call or schedule a virtual appointment. Although our world is in quite an awkward limbo-state, it doesn’t mean that your child needs to suffer. If they are experiencing any of the symptoms above, reach out and let us know. We are here to help.
